The following Mission Statement was adopted by SOCTP in December 2000.
Our world has entered an era of global communication unrivaled in human history.
This expansion of human dialogue and exchange brings with it not only new obstacles in the form of
unfamiliar discussions, but also the promise of greater understanding once these obstacles are met
successfully. In this world where all individuals are increasingly informed of religious, social, political, and
economic events throughout the globe, as well as in the lives of communities and individuals, there is a
critical need for ongoing reflection upon and understanding of diverse theological and philosophical
values. SOCTP recognizes that every culture or tradition is grounded in its own theological and
philosophical foundation expressing the fundamental value system of that group. SOCTP's mission is to
promote reflection through excellence in scholarship into the understanding and application of Christian
theology and philosophy.
SOCTP is dedicated to furthering knowledge of Christian theology and philosophy, as well as
theological and philosophical institutions in all their forms and manifestations. This is accomplished
through SOCTP publications, programs, forums and membership services.
Within a context of free inquiry and critical examination, SOCTP welcomes all disciplined
reflection on Christian theology and philosophy -- both from within and outside of communities of belief
and practice -- and seeks to enhance the broad public understanding of these fields.
